Sigma Boy Took Over Every Playground on Earth. Betsy Is the Voice Behind It.

We're continuing our Generation Alpha Influencer Profiles series here at Generation Alpha Life — where we spotlight the Gen Alpha creators, athletes, and artists doing something extraordinary. This time, you already know the song. Everybody's kids know the song.

"Sigma sigma boy, sigma boy, sigma boy…" — if that loop just started playing in your head, you're not alone. It's been living in playgrounds, group chats, game lobbies and family cars for two years now. And it starts with one singer: a Russian kid artist named Betsy.

A Meme the Whole Generation Shares

Wikipedia describes "Sigma Boy" as "a popular meme amongst Generation Alpha" — and honestly, that undersells it. Released on October 4, 2024, the song didn't climb the usual ladder. It detonated. It hit number one on Spotify's Viral 50 Global chart — the chart that measures what the internet is passing around fastest — and reached number seven on Billboard's Hot Dance/Pop Songs chart in the United States.

The official music video has been watched hundreds of millions of times. Not by music critics. By kids — showing it to other kids, the way this generation has always distributed the things it loves: hand to hand, screen to screen, no permission asked.

Who Is Betsy?

Betsy's full name is Svetlana Chertishcheva, and she's been releasing songs in Russia since 2020 — her first single was called "Первоклашка," which means "First-Grader." "Sigma Boy," released on the Rhymes Music label, is a duet: Betsy sings it with Maria Yankovskaya, a young performer who also hosts on STS Kids, a Russian children's TV channel. Two kids, one two-minute song, and a hook engineered — whether anyone meant it or not — to survive translation into every language on Earth. It barely needs words at all.

And here's the family detail that makes the story: "Sigma Boy" was written by Betsy's dad, composer Mikhail Chertishchev, together with rock singer Mukka. Her Instagram bio says it plainly — the account is run by her dad, her manager. The biggest Gen Alpha anthem on the planet is, at the center of it, a family production.

The Numbers Kept Climbing

Two years after release, this isn't a fading viral moment. Betsy's Spotify artist page draws about 1.2 million monthly listeners. Her YouTube channel has roughly 3.5 million subscribers, and more than 300,000 people follow her on Instagram. The song keeps getting rebuilt, too: official remixes — techno, Brazilian funk, club versions — keep landing on streaming services, each one handing the hook to a new audience.

That's the thing adults miss about songs like this. A hit plays on the radio until the radio moves on. A meme belongs to the kids, and they don't move on — they build on it.

The Debate That Didn't Slow It Down

A song this big was never going to stay just a song. "Sigma Boy" picked up political controversy abroad — a member of the European Parliament publicly criticized it, and a Russian military choir later recorded its own version. Grown-ups argued about what the song meant.

Kids kept dancing to it.

We'll put it the way we see it: controversy is part of good music. It always has been — every generation's defining songs were somebody's scandal first. The argument didn't bury "Sigma Boy." It carried it further, into rooms a two-minute kids' pop song from Russia would never have reached on its own.

Why Betsy Stands Out

  • She fronts the generation's defining meme. "Sigma Boy" isn't a song Gen Alpha likes; it's a piece of culture Gen Alpha owns, spread kid-to-kid across every border.
  • The charts back it up. Number one on Spotify's Viral 50 Global and top ten on a Billboard chart — viral and verified at the same time.
  • It's a family operation. Her dad co-wrote the song and runs her accounts; the biggest kid-culture moment of the decade started at a family's kitchen-table level.
  • The song outran the argument. Criticism, covers by a military choir, endless debate — and the hook is still stuck in your head. Staying power is the whole game.

You can debate the song all you want. The generation already voted — with hundreds of millions of plays.
