Meet the Previous Generation Alpha

Meet the Previous Generation Alpha

What if you could step through your bedroom mirror?

You glance into your mirror while getting ready for the day.

But today...

Something is different.

Instead of seeing your own reflection, another girl is looking back at you.

She looks about your age.

She smiles.

She's wearing strange clothes, standing in a room lit only by candles.

"Hi," she says. "I'm Generation Alpha too."

You laugh.

"That's impossible. Generation Alpha didn't exist back then."

She grins.

"Not exactly. But if generation names repeated every 26 generations, I'd be the Previous Generation Alpha."

She reaches toward the mirror.

"Want to see my world?"

You take a deep breath...

...and step through.

---

## 🍞 "First, let's have dinner."

Her family gathers around a wooden table.

No microwave.

No refrigerator.

No frozen pizza.

Dinner is fresh bread, cheese, vegetable stew, apples, eggs, and roasted chicken for special occasions.

Dessert?

Maybe honey cakes.

You ask, "Where are the potato chips?"

She looks confused.

"What are potato chips?"

Potatoes have only recently arrived from the Americas and aren't common food here yet.

Pizza?

Not yet.

French fries?

Not yet.

Chocolate candy?

Not yet.

---

## 🚽 "Need to use the bathroom?"

You suddenly realize...

There isn't one.

No flushing toilet.

No toilet paper.

"What do you use?" you ask.

She shrugs.

"Whatever nature gives us."

Depending on where she lives, that might be moss, leaves, straw, cloth, or water.

"Your world has paper just for that?"

Now she's the one who's amazed.

---

## 🎒 "Come to school with me."

She laughs.

"I don't."

Many children around 1520 never went to a formal school.

Instead, they learned from their parents.

Some farmed.

Some baked bread.

Some worked with animals.

Some became blacksmiths, weavers, carpenters, or merchants.

If your parents were farmers...

You'd probably become one too.

Only a small number of children attended schools or universities, and those opportunities usually belonged to wealthier families or those preparing for professions like the church.

You think about your backpack sitting back in your bedroom.

Suddenly homework doesn't seem quite so bad.

---

## ⚽ "Want to play?"

"Sure!"

There aren't any video games.

No TV.

No internet.

Instead you spend the afternoon racing, climbing trees, wrestling, kicking balls, throwing sticks, spinning tops, playing marbles, and laughing until sunset.

You don't miss your phone...

At least not yet.

---

## 🚿 "Time for a bath."

She carries buckets of water.

Every bucket had to be filled by hand.

Then the water must be heated over a fire.

A bath isn't impossible...

It's just a lot of work.

Most people washed regularly, but daily hot showers like many people enjoy today simply weren't practical.

---

## 🩺 "Uh-oh..."

You scrape your knee.

"No problem," you think.

"Where's the first-aid kit?"

She looks puzzled.

There are no bandages like yours.

No antibiotics.

No X-rays.

No MRI machines.

If someone became seriously ill, doctors did the best they could with the medical knowledge available at the time, while many families also relied on herbs and home remedies.

You suddenly become very thankful for modern medicine.

---

## 🌾 "What will you be when you grow up?"

"I don't know," you answer.

"A scientist?"

"A game designer?"

"A marine biologist?"

"An astronaut?"

She smiles.

"You get to choose?"

For many children in her world, life offered fewer choices.

Families often passed trades from one generation to the next, and moving into a completely different career was much harder than it is today.

---

## 🌌 One More Thing...

Night falls.

There are no streetlights.

No headlights.

No glowing windows.

You look up...

...and nearly forget to breathe.

The sky is overflowing with stars.

The Milky Way stretches from one horizon to the other.

"I see this every night," she whispers.

---

## Time to Go Home

The mirror begins to glow again.

You know it's time.

"I wish I could visit your world," she says.

"You'd love airplanes."

"And ice cream."

"And music from every country."

"And talking to people on the other side of the world."

She smiles.

"I think I'd like your world."

You smile back.

"I think I'd miss mine."

The two of you touch the mirror.

For just a second, your hands almost meet.

Then...

You're standing back in your bedroom.

Everything is exactly where you left it.

Except now...

When you flip a light switch...

Turn on a faucet...

Open the refrigerator...

Or pick up your phone...

You remember the girl from 500 years ago.

She was curious.

She laughed.

She dreamed about the future.

Just like you.

Maybe history isn't really about people who lived long ago.

Maybe...

It's about kids just like us.
